Minimum wage in Kenya
Kenya has no single minimum wage. Minimum wage orders set the amounts by occupation and by area, such as cities and towns, and by rural areas, and are reviewed by wages councils.

Who sets it
The Government makes Regulation of Wages Orders after advice from wages councils, which include representatives of employers and workers.
How it changes
The amounts are changed by a new order. The Government has raised them from time to time, often announced around Labour Day.
Who is covered, and who is treated differently
- Rates differ by occupation, such as general labourer, cleaner or driver, and by place.
- Separate orders cover sectors such as agriculture, domestic service and the building industry.
What to watch for
- There is no one figure for the country. Find the order that applies to the occupation and area.
Understand the legal system first
Kenya belongs to the Common law family. How pay is regulated depends on how the legal system makes and applies labour law.
