India has no single minimum wage for the whole country. Under the Code on Wages, the central government can fix a national floor wage, and each government fixes minimum wages that must not fall below it.

Who sets it
The Code on Wages, 2019 lets the central government fix a floor wage, and requires the central and state governments to set minimum wages that are not lower than the floor. The central government sets them for its own sphere, such as railways and mines, and states for the rest.
How it changes
Governments revise the minimum wages from time to time. They can differ by state, by region within a state, and by skill level.
Who is covered, and who is treated differently
- Rates are usually set per day, and some states also state a monthly rate.
- Rates differ by skill category such as unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled.
What to watch for
- There is no one figure for the country. Find the notified rate for the state, the sector and the skill category.
Understand the legal system first
India belongs to the Common law family. How pay is regulated depends on how the legal system makes and applies labour law.
