Document Automation
Build templates, conditional clauses and clause libraries that produce correct legal documents, and prove that they do.

Lawyers write the same documents again and again, and most of each document is the same every time. Document automation captures what stays the same in a template, what changes as a short set of questions and the rules that decide which text appears. Done well, it produces a correct document in minutes. Done badly, it produces confident errors in volume. This is the third course of the Legal Engineer Program. It teaches how a template is built, how to put logic in it, how to build clause libraries and playbooks, how to design the questions a user answers, how to test every branch and the awkward data that breaks templates, and how to run a system with ownership, access control and measurement. It comes with a Template Tester that renders a template against your data and checks it, and it ends with a capstone in which you build and test an automated employment offer letter.
The Curriculum
What document automation is: assembling documents from templates and data→
Template plus data plus rules; three ways to produce a document; good candidates; benefits and risks; the life of an automated document. Practice: Good Candidate? and Which Approach?
The anatomy of a template: fixed text, variables, types and the data dictionary→
Fixed text and variables, naming, data types, formatting, the data dictionary, defined terms and how to turn a finished document into a template. Practice: Fixed, Variable or Choice? and the Template Tester.
Conditions and logic: text that appears only when it should→
If, else and nesting; conditions on values, absence and numbers; where logic belongs; grammar and empty values. Practice: Read the Condition and a Template Tester exercise with branches.
Clause libraries and playbooks: standard text, fallbacks and who decides→
Clause records, preferred and fallback positions, playbooks, selecting clauses by rule, consistency and change control. Practice: Which Position? and Selecting a Clause in the Template Tester.
Designing the questionnaire: asking for the facts, once, in plain words→
Ask only what is needed, in order, in plain words; question types, validation, skip logic, repeating parties and a final review screen. Practice: Fix the Question and Build the Interview.
Testing and quality: proving that every document comes out right→
Branch coverage and the test matrix, edge data, reading the output, regression and release checks. Practice: Which Test Case? and a faulty template to repair in the Template Tester.
Running the system: ownership, access, security, rollout and measurement→
Ownership and change control, access and approvals, security and retention, choosing a tool by criteria, rollout, metrics and AI. Practice: Who May Do What? and Choosing a Tool.
Capstone: Capstone: build and test an automated employment offer letter→
Dictionary, questions, template, test matrix and release note for an automated offer letter. The third piece of your portfolio.
What It Covers
“You will learn to build a template that adapts to the facts, and to prove that every document it produces is right.”
- Seven modules and a capstone that follow the life of an automated document: template, logic, clauses, questions, testing and running it.
- No code and no particular product: the logic is taught in a plain template language that you can practise in the browser, and the ideas carry over to any tool.
- A working tool you keep using: the Template Tester renders your template against your data and reports missing values, unused data, unclosed blocks and unknown conditions.
- The third piece of your portfolio: a tested template, a test matrix and a one-page release note.

Step 3 of 8 in the Legal Engineer Program
Learn to design, automate and measure legal work, and finish with a portfolio you can show. Each course is sold on its own; the whole program is $69 once and unlocks every course in it.
See the whole programModule 1 is free to try. Sign in, pass each module quiz and the course average, and your Certificate of Completion is emailed to you automatically. This course teaches method and technique with invented people and figures; it is general education, not legal advice, and professional rules differ from country to country.
Common questions
- Do I need to be able to code?
- No. The template language is plain text with a few tags, and it is the same logic used by commercial assembly products. You learn the thinking; the product syntax is a detail.
- Does it teach a particular product?
- No. It teaches principles and a method of testing, and it explains how to choose a tool by criteria rather than by brand.
- Do I need the earlier courses of the program?
- They help, especially Process Mapping and Decision Design, whose decision trees feed the templates. But the course stands on its own.
- Is this the Legal Engineer Program?
- It is the third course. The whole program is sold as a bundle at a lower price than buying each course, and this course can also be bought on its own.
- Are the example clauses recommended wording?
- No. Clauses and letters in the course are invented illustrations of structure. Real documents must be drafted for the law and the deal, and checked by a lawyer.
- How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
- Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
