The Law To Know

Module 5

Designing the questionnaire: asking for the facts, once, in plain words

The questionnaire is where the user meets the system, and where most documents are lost or spoilt. A bad question gets a wrong answer; a confusing form is abandoned; a long one makes people guess. Lawyers tend to write questions in the vocabulary of the document (‘Specify the Counterparty’s registered office’) when the user is a sales manager who knows the customer’s address but not what a registered office is. This module teaches how to design the interview that gathers the facts: what to ask, in what order, in what words, with what checks and how to skip what does not apply. It treats the user, not the lawyer, as the reader of the form.

General education on legal document automation, using invented organisations, documents and figures. It is not legal advice. Clauses and letters are illustrations of structure, not recommended wording: real documents must follow the law that applies and be checked by a lawyer.
