Module 3
Conditions and logic: text that appears only when it should
A template without logic is a form with blanks. A template with logic adapts: a paragraph about authority appears only when the client is a company, a clause about hourly fees only when fees are hourly, a different closing for an urgent matter. Conditional text is what turns a template into a system, and it is also where almost all errors in automated documents arise. A condition that tests the wrong thing, a branch that no one tested and a sentence that reads badly in one combination of answers are the usual faults. This module teaches the logic of conditional text, how to keep it manageable and how to avoid the traps. You will practise in the Template Tester, which supports if and else, comparisons and nesting.

See what is included in All-Access →General education on legal document automation, using invented organisations, documents and figures. It is not legal advice. Clauses and letters are illustrations of structure, not recommended wording: real documents must follow the law that applies and be checked by a lawyer.
