Legal teams are being offered AI tools faster than they can judge them. This is the fifth course of the Legal Engineer Program, and it is about judgement and design rather than about any product. It explains what a language model does and how it fails, how to write a prompt as a specification that can be tested, how retrieval gives a model the right passages and why most wrong answers are really retrieval problems, how to divide a workflow between the model, ordinary rules and people, how to evaluate a workflow with test sets, precision and recall, and how to govern it: confidentiality, professional duties, data protection, security, rollout, monitoring and accountability. It comes with a Retrieval Playground that lets you watch search succeed and fail, and it ends with a capstone in which you design and justify an AI-assisted contract review for an invented company.

The Curriculum

01

What AI can and cannot do in legal work: language models, tasks and fit→

What a language model does, the failure modes, seven kinds of legal task and how to match a task to a level of AI use. Practice: Task Fit and Spot the Failure.

02

Prompts as specifications: instructions that can be tested→

The parts of a good prompt, constraints that keep the model to the text, structured output with quotations, examples, injection and testing prompts like code. Practice: Fix the Prompt and Build a Prompt.

03

Retrieval and grounding: giving the model the right passages→

Retrieve then answer; chunking and metadata; keyword and meaning-based search; vocabulary mismatch; permissions; citing sources. Practice: Why Did It Miss? and the Retrieval Playground.

04

Workflow patterns and checkpoints: where the model, the rules and the person each belong→

Model, rules or person; five workflow patterns; checkpoints; error handling and logging. Practice: Who Does This Step? and Spot the Design Flaw.

05

Evaluating AI workflows: test sets, precision and recall, and knowing that it works→

Test sets, accuracy, precision and recall, the cost of each kind of error, baselines, error analysis, acceptance criteria and monitoring. Practice: Work Out the Rates and Spot the Weak Evaluation.

06

Risk, duties and security: using AI in legal work responsibly→

Confidentiality and supplier terms, data protection, professional duties, intellectual property, bias, AI-specific security threats and a pre-use risk check. Practice: Risk to Control and Before You Use It.

07

Deploying and governing: rollout, change, monitoring and accountability→

Pilots and rollout, build or buy, versions and change control, monitoring, incidents, training and ownership. Practice: Build, Buy or Wait? and What Do You Monitor?

08

Capstone: Capstone: design and justify an AI-assisted contract review workflow→

Design the workflow, write the prompt, plan retrieval, set checkpoints, plan the evaluation, run the risk check and write the one-page note. The fifth piece of your portfolio.

“You will learn to use AI where it helps, to catch it where it fails and to show a decision maker the evidence that the workflow can be trusted.”
  • Seven modules and a capstone that follow a workflow from first principles to deployment: task fit, prompt, retrieval, patterns, evaluation, risk and governance.
  • No code and no product: the principles apply to whatever tools you are offered, and you learn to test claims on your own documents.
  • A working tool you keep using: the Retrieval Playground shows how keyword search finds and misses passages in a clause library, and how synonym expansion helps.
  • The fifth piece of your portfolio: a workflow design with a prompt specification, an evaluation plan, a risk check and a one-page note for a decision maker.

Module 1 is free to try. Sign in, pass each module quiz and the course average, and your Certificate of Completion is emailed to you automatically. This course teaches method and technique with invented people and figures; it is general education, not legal advice, and professional rules differ from country to country.

Common questions

Do I need to know how AI works technically?
No. The course explains what you need in plain words: what a language model does, why it fails and how a workflow controls the failures. It is about design and judgement.
Does it recommend a particular AI product?
No. Products change quickly. The course teaches principles, and how to test any tool on your own documents.
How does it differ from Checking Legal AI Tools?
That course teaches how to test how existing tools fail and how to measure them. This course teaches how to design the workflow around a model, from prompt and retrieval to checkpoints and governance.
Is this the Legal Engineer Program?
It is the fifth course. The whole program is sold as a bundle at a lower price than buying each course, and this course can also be bought on its own.
Is it legal advice about using AI?
No. It is general education. Laws, professional rules and regulation on AI differ between countries and change quickly: check the rules that apply to you.
How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
