The Law To Know

Module 3

Retrieval and grounding: giving the model the right passages

When an AI tool gives a wrong answer about your own contracts or policies, the cause is usually not that the model reasoned badly but that it was shown the wrong passages, or none. The model can only work with what is in front of it. Retrieval is the step that decides what to put there. This module teaches the pattern used by most legal AI products: find the relevant passages in a trusted collection, give them to the model with an instruction to answer only from them, and show the sources. It explains how documents are split and indexed, how search methods find and miss, how permissions and metadata keep the system safe and current and why a legal engineer should always look at what was retrieved before judging what was answered. The Retrieval Playground lets you watch retrieval succeed and fail on a small clause library.
