Source: CDC/NCHS, Divorce rates by state: 1990, 1995 and 2000-2024. Data for 2024. What it counts, how to cite it and the data

At a glance

  • 46 countries or territories have a figure.
  • The highest is Nevada at 3.8 (2024) and the lowest is Louisiana at 0.8 (2024).
  • The middle value (the median) is 2.5.

What it counts

Divorces (provisional counts by the state where they took place), per 1,000 residents, for the latest year reported.

What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison

States that attract people from elsewhere for a quick divorce record more divorces than their own residents have. Some states do not report (California, Hawaii, Indiana, Minnesota and New Mexico in the latest data), and the counts are provisional.
