Divorce Rates by Country and US State

How common is divorce, and is it becoming more or less common? This guide gives the official figures for 58 countries and 46 US states, with the trend since the 1960s or 1990s, taken from the statistical offices that publish them: Eurostat, the OECD and the US Centers for Disease Control.

Part of the comparative law toolkit. Each page has a chart of the trend and links to the original source.

What the numbers mean, and what they do not

You will often read that “half of all marriages end in divorce”. No official statistics office publishes that figure, because it can only be a forecast. What they publish is the crude divorce rate: the number of divorces in a year for every 1,000 people living in the country. Some, like Eurostat, also publish the number of divorces in a year for every 100 marriages in the same year. That is a comparison of two numbers for one year. It is not the share of marriages that end in divorce, and it can look very high or very low simply because fewer or more couples married that year. We show both, and we explain each on every page.

Click a heading to sort. “Per 1,000” is the crude divorce rate in the latest year shown. “Per 100 marriages” is divorces in a year for every 100 marriages in the same year (an asterisk means we worked it out from the OECD’s crude divorce and marriage rates). A few countries stopped reporting, so their latest year is older.
