At a glance

  • 54 countries or territories have a figure.
  • The highest is Moldova at 4.0 (2024) and the lowest is Kosovo at 0.5 (2019).
  • The middle value (the median) is 1.7.

What it counts

The crude divorce rate: the number of divorces in a year divided by the average population, times 1,000, for the latest year reported since 2015.

What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison

A crude rate depends on how many people are of marrying age and on how many are married, and it is not the share of marriages that end in divorce. Countries differ in whether a divorce needs a court, and in how separation is counted.
