At a glance
- 38 countries or territories have a figure.
- The highest is Iceland at 69.4% (2019) and the lowest is Türkiye at 3.4% (2024).
- The middle value (the median) is 37.3%.
What it counts
Live births to mothers who are not married, as a share of all live births, in the latest year each country reports (since 2019).
What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison
Many of these children are born to couples who live together in a stable partnership, and the legal position of unmarried parents (for example on parental responsibility, surnames and inheritance) differs between countries. The figure is a measure of how common marriage is before parenthood, not of family stability. Eurostat marks Kosovo with an asterisk: this designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244/1999 and the ICJ opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.
