Legal Data and Dashboards
Structure legal data, ask it questions, check it, turn the answers into honest metrics and dashboards, and run them responsibly.

Every legal matter, contract and request leaves data behind, and most of it is never used. This is the fourth course of the Legal Engineer Program. It teaches how to turn that trail into answers: how to structure data so that it can be counted, how to ask a table questions in a query language that reads almost like English, how to check data for the errors and biases that make a correct calculation mislead, how to write metrics that are precise and hard to game, how to choose charts and design a one-page dashboard that people use and how to govern the numbers, with attention to client confidentiality and to the ethics of measuring colleagues. It comes with a Query Playground, a safe, read-only table of invented matters that runs in your browser, and it ends with a capstone in which you check the data, answer a managing partner’s questions and write her a one-page report.
The Curriculum
The data legal work produces: sources, structure and what a row stands for→
The data that legal work produces, structured and unstructured, the unit of analysis, the questions it can answer and the duties of confidentiality. Practice: Structured or Not? and What Does a Row Stand For?
Structuring data: tables, columns, consistent values and the tidy table→
One row per thing, one column per fact, one value per cell; consistent values, dates, missing data, keys and the data dictionary. Practice: Messy or Tidy? and Fix the Table.
Asking questions of data: select, filter, count, group and sort→
Select, where, count, group by, order by and limit; turning a question into a query and checking the answer. Practice: Which Query? and the Query Playground.
Data quality and bias: finding what is wrong before you trust a number→
Six dimensions of data quality, checks by query, cleaning rules and the biases that mislead. Practice: Name the Problem, Spot the Bias and checks in the Query Playground.
Metrics that mean something: definitions, rates, averages and the traps of targets→
The metric card, counts and rates, averages and medians, leading and lagging indicators, targets and gaming. Practice: Which Measure? and Write the Definition.
Charts and dashboards: showing the answer so that people act on it→
Question and audience first; table, bar and line; how charts mislead; one-page dashboard design; context, targets and annotation. Practice: Which Chart? and Spot the Misleading Chart.
Governing and using the numbers: ownership, access, ethics and decisions→
Data owners and a glossary, access and small numbers, reproducible analysis, the ethics of measuring people, AI-assisted analysis and acting on results. Practice: Who May See This? and Act or Investigate?
Capstone: Capstone: a dashboard and a report for the managing partner→
Check the data, answer six questions with queries, define a one-page dashboard and write the report. The fourth piece of your portfolio.
What It Covers
“You will learn to ask data a question, to check the answer before you believe it and to show it in a way that leads to a decision.”
- Seven modules and a capstone that follow an analysis from raw table to report: structure, query, check, measure, show and govern.
- No prior data skills needed: queries are taught from the first line, and the Query Playground lets you practise without installing anything.
- Honest about what goes wrong: data quality, survivorship and small-number bias, gaming and the limits of what a number can say.
- The fourth piece of your portfolio: a checked analysis with metric cards, a dashboard design and a one-page report.

Common questions
- Do I need to know any statistics or programming?
- No. You need ordinary arithmetic and care. The query language is taught from the beginning, and the statistics are kept to counts, rates, averages and medians.
- Is the Query Playground real SQL?
- It is a small subset of SQL that runs in your browser on an invented table. It is enough to learn the thinking, and the skills carry directly to real databases, which support more.
- Does it teach a particular dashboard product?
- No. It teaches how to define measures and design a dashboard in a way that works in any tool, from a spreadsheet to a specialist product.
- Is this the Legal Engineer Program?
- It is the fourth course. The whole program is sold as a bundle at a lower price than buying each course, and this course can also be bought on its own.
- Is the data real?
- No. All data in the course is invented. When you work with real data you must follow the confidentiality duties covered in Module 1 and Module 7.
- How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
- Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
