Module 6
Charts and dashboards: showing the answer so that people act on it
A good analysis that nobody understands changes nothing. The last step of working with data is to show the answer in a form that a busy person, who has not seen the data and will give it two minutes, can understand and act on. That is the job of a chart and, when there are several, of a dashboard. The rules are not complicated, but they are often broken: a chart is chosen because it looks impressive, a dashboard grows until nobody can read it and a truncated axis makes a small change look like a collapse. This module teaches how to begin with the question and the audience, how to choose among the few forms of display that do most of the work, how charts mislead and how to design a one-page dashboard that people use.
