Module 2
Structuring data: tables, columns, consistent values and the tidy table
Most legal data starts life in a spreadsheet built by someone who needed to keep track of something. It grows columns as new needs arise, mixes facts and comments, spells the same thing three ways and leaves gaps. It is usable by its author and almost useless to anyone else. Before you can ask questions of data, you must put it into a shape that a program, or a person who did not make it, can count. That shape is surprisingly simple: a tidy table. This module teaches what a tidy table is, how to choose and enforce consistent values, how to treat dates, numbers and gaps, how tables are linked and how to document what each column means.
