Practising law in Greece as a foreign lawyer

A route exists, with conditionsAsk the regulator about home-law practice

EU lawyers can register with a Greek bar and practise under their home title. For other foreign lawyers we could not find a clear route. The Greek route for local lawyers is a law degree, about 18 months of training and a bar exam.

Rules change. This page describes the kinds of route that exist. The regulator listed under “Official sources” publishes the current requirements, fees and dates, so always confirm with them. This is general information, not legal advice.

The routes

Lawyers from the EU

For: Lawyers who hold a title in an EU member state.

  1. Register with the relevant Greek bar and practise permanently under your home title, as set out in the presidential decree that implements the EU directive on lawyers' establishment (Presidential Decree 152/2000).

The Greek route to qualification

For: People who want to qualify as Greek lawyers.

  1. Hold a law degree recognised in Greece. Foreign degrees may need an equivalence decision, and sources differ on when it is required.
  2. Complete about 18 months of professional training and pass the bar exams, which are organised twice a year by the presidents of the Greek bars.

We found no source that sets out a general route for lawyers qualified outside the EU, so ask a Greek bar association.

Lawyers from the United Kingdom

For: UK-qualified lawyers.

  1. Under the UK's trade agreement with the EU, Greek legislation allows UK-qualified lawyers based in Greece to register with a bar to advise on English law and public international law.

Practising only your home-country law

EU lawyers practise under their home title. UK lawyers have a specific route to advise on English law. For others we found no clear rule.

Understand the legal system first

Greece belongs to the Civil law family. Knowing how its system works makes the admission route easier to follow.
