Recognise the degree, then obtain the title from the Supreme Court
For: Foreign-qualified lawyers who want to practise as an abogado in Chile.
- If your country has a treaty with Chile on recognising professional degrees, start a recognition process at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If not, have your studies validated at the University of Chile.
- Meet the general requirements for the title: a law degree, good conduct, no disqualifying convictions, and a period of practice (about six months) at a judicial assistance corporation.
- Submit the documents to the Supreme Court, which grants the title of abogado. The certificate issued at the end of recognition does not itself authorise practice.
Sources conflict on whether permanent residence is required, and on how the practice period applies to foreign degrees, so check with the Supreme Court.
