Practising law in Ghana as a foreign lawyer

A route exists, with conditionsAsk the regulator about home-law practice

Ghanaians with a foreign law degree go through the Ghana School of Law's entrance exam and professional course. Lawyers already called to the bar in a similar common-law country can take a shorter post-call course. The rules have been contested in court.

Rules change. This page describes the kinds of route that exist. The regulator listed under “Official sources” publishes the current requirements, fees and dates, so always confirm with them. This is general information, not legal advice.

The routes

Ghanaian citizens with a foreign LL.B.

For: Ghanaians who studied law abroad.

  1. Show that you passed the required core subjects, including Ghana-specific ones, and an elective.
  2. Take the entrance examination and interview at the Ghana School of Law, if still required.
  3. Complete the Professional Law Course (about two years) and a six-month internship, pass the final assessments, and be called to the Bar.

A reported Supreme Court decision said the General Legal Council could not make the entrance exam and interview mandatory for holders of a Ghanaian LL.B. The School still lists them, so check the current position.

Lawyers already called abroad (Post-Call Law Course)

For: Ghanaians qualified in a similar legal system, and non-Ghanaian lawyers from countries with a reciprocal arrangement.

  1. Show that you have studied the core subjects, or their equivalents, and take the Post-Call Law Course at the Ghana School of Law.

Practising only your home-country law

We could not confirm a rule on practising only home-country law in Ghana. Ask the General Legal Council.

Understand the legal system first

Ghana belongs to the Common law family. Knowing how its system works makes the admission route easier to follow.
