Source: Eurostat, Asylum applicants by type, citizenship, age and sex (migr_asyappctza) and population on 1 January (demo_pjan). Data for 2025. What it counts, how to cite it and the data
At a glance
- 32 countries or territories have a figure.
- The highest is Greece at 534 (2025) and the lowest is Hungary at 1 (2025).
- The middle value (the median) is 72.
What it counts
People who lodged an application for international protection for the first time in the year, divided by the population on 1 January and multiplied by 100,000, in the latest year each country reports (since 2021).
What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison
Applications follow wars, crises and routes of travel, not a country's policies alone, and many applicants move on to another country before a decision. A small country with few applicants can show a high rate. The figure counts people, not decisions: see the chart of positive decisions.
