Source: Eurostat, Personnel in the criminal justice system by sex (crim_just_job). Data for 2019 to 2024. What it counts, how to cite it and the data

At a glance

  • 37 countries or territories have a figure.
  • The highest is Slovenia at 81.4% (2024) and the lowest is Kosovo* at 32.7% (2019).
  • The middle value (the median) is 61.7%.

What it counts

The number of women among professional judges divided by all professional judges, for the latest year reported since 2018.

What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison

Shares among all judges reflect decades of appointments and say nothing about who sits on the highest courts or who becomes a court president. Systems differ in who counts as a professional judge. Eurostat marks Kosovo with an asterisk: the designation is without prejudice to positions on status.
