At a glance

  • 37 countries or territories have a figure.
  • The highest is Liechtenstein at 50.0 (2024) and the lowest is Ireland at 3.6 (2024).
  • The middle value (the median) is 17.0.

What it counts

Judges who sit in courts as a profession, per 100,000 inhabitants, in the European countries that report to Eurostat.

What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison

Systems differ in who counts as a professional judge: lay judges, magistrates and prosecutors are often counted separately, and some countries have far more courts and levels than others. Compare with care. The figure says nothing about how fast or how well courts work.
