The Law To Know

A program, not just a course

Law and Data Practitioner Program

Learn to put honest numbers on legal work: risk, cases, contracts, money, negotiations, deals and regulation, and to show them so that people act.

12 courses, a working tool in each, about 60 hours of study, a Program Certificate and a With Distinction tier. $69 for everything, once (the courses are $180 separately).

Lawyers are asked questions that are really questions about data: how likely is it, how long will it take, what is it worth, what is in these contracts, are we compliant, what should we offer. This program teaches the habits of a practitioner who answers them with evidence and with honesty about its limits. It starts with how legal data is structured and what a measure is, then applies the method to risk, to litigation outcomes, to contract portfolios, to the economics of a matter, to negotiation, to due diligence and to regulatory compliance, and it ends with how to show the result so that a client or a board can decide. Every course has a working tool with invented data, a capstone and a graded quiz. It is written in jurisdiction-neutral terms and says where the law you work under may differ.

What you will be able to do

  • Define a legal measure properly and read it honestly, with its denominator and its limits.
  • Put ranges on risk, estimate expected values and compare options with a decision tree.
  • Analyse a portfolio of contracts and a table of past cases without overclaiming.
  • Estimate, price and track a matter so that it makes money.
  • Prepare a negotiation with a valued alternative, benchmarks and a plan for concessions and trades.
  • Plan and report a due diligence review, and map a regulation to controls and evidence.
  • Present the result in charts, numbers and slides that a client or a board can act on.

Who it is for

  • Lawyers who are asked for numbers and want to answer well, in firms or in-house.
  • Legal operations, pricing, knowledge and risk staff.
  • Compliance and regulatory professionals who work with lawyers.
  • Law students and new lawyers who want a skill that is rare in the profession.

The work you keep

The capstone of each core course produces a piece of work you can keep and show. Together they show how you think about evidence.

  1. 1. A risk assessment with ranges

A matter or decision with likelihood and impact estimated as ranges, an expected value and a decision tree.

  2. 2. A contract portfolio analysis

A clean contract table, the portfolio questions asked of it and a report that states its limits.

  3. 3. A case-outcome briefing

A base rate, duration and award range for a type of claim, a forecast and an honest note on its weaknesses.

  4. 4. A matter pricing model

An estimate with ranges, a fee proposal and a plan for tracking scope.

  5. 5. A negotiation preparation sheet

A valued alternative, a benchmark, a concession plan and a package of trades.

  6. 6. A findings register and an obligations map

Due diligence findings ranked and matched to protections, and a regulation mapped to controls.

  7. 7. A one-page decision summary

An honest chart, a number framed fairly and a recommendation, ready for a board.

Certificates

Each course issues its own Certificate of Completion. The program adds two more: a Program Certificate when every core course is passed, stating the study hours (about 45 hours of study across 9 core courses), and a Program Certificate with Distinction. They are certificates of completion from TheLawToKnow, not an accredited qualification or accredited continuing professional development.

Study time is estimated from the content: reading at 170 words a minute, the exercises and the quizzes. It comes to about 45 hours for the 9 core courses and about 60 hours with the recommended electives. It is an estimate of an attentive student’s time, not a promise.

Program Certificate

  • Pass each of the 9 core courses (an average of at least 75 across its graded modules).

With Distinction

  • The Program Certificate.
  • An average of at least 90 across the core courses.
  • A pass of at least 85 per cent on the timed program exam: 45 questions, 5 from each core course, 75 minutes. It can be retaken.

Common questions

Do I need to know statistics or code?
No. The program uses averages, percentages and simple ratios, explains each in words and builds the tools into the courses. If you can use a spreadsheet, you can follow it.
How long does it take?
The estimate is computed from the content of the courses: reading, exercises and quizzes. The page shows the hours for the nine core courses and for the whole program. Most people take a course in two to three weeks of evenings.
How does the price work?
Each course is $15 on its own. The whole program, including the three recommended electives, is one purchase, or is included in an All-Access Membership. Module 1 of every course is free to read first.
What certificates are there?
Each course issues its own Certificate of Completion when you pass its quizzes. When you have passed all nine core courses you can claim the Program Certificate, which states the program and its study hours. A With Distinction certificate is also available: it needs a course average of at least 90 across the core courses and a pass on a timed program exam.
Are these certificates accredited?
No. They are certificates of completion from TheLawToKnow, not a qualification, a degree or accredited continuing professional development. If your professional body gives credit for study, you need to ask it and may need to apply yourself.
Is any of it legal advice?
No. The people, companies and figures are invented for teaching, and the courses are general education about using data in legal work.
