Who Is This For?
Since September 2021, the SQE has been the single qualifying route to becoming a solicitor of England & Wales for domestic graduates and foreign-qualified lawyers alike — the same exam either way (foreign lawyers may separately qualify for exemptions from parts of it).
SQE is a two-part exam set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and administered by Kaplan. SQE1 tests functional legal knowledge through single-best-answer questions across two papers; SQE2 tests how you apply that knowledge through sixteen separate skills assessments built around a client-based problem set. Ethics and professional conduct are tested pervasively throughout both stages, not as a subject of their own.
The Curriculum
SQE1 — FLK1→
Business Law and Practice, Dispute Resolution, Contract Law, Tort, the Legal System of England & Wales, and Legal Services — single-best-answer practice with a full explanation after every question.
SQE1 — FLK2→
Property Law and Practice, Wills and the Administration of Estates, Solicitors Accounts, Land Law, Trusts Law, Criminal Liability, and Criminal Law and Practice — the same format, the second paper's subjects.
SQE2 — Oral Skills→
Advocacy, Client Interview, and Attendance Note / Legal Analysis — branching, client-facing scenarios built around the real assessed criteria for each skill.
SQE2 — Written Skills→
Case & Matter Analysis, Legal Research, Legal Drafting, and Legal Writing — the same branching-scenario format, applied to the written half of SQE2.
Full-Length Practice Papers→
A real two-paper timed mock of SQE1 — FLK1 and FLK2 sat back to back, at the exam's actual timing and question count.
