Who Is This For?
The QLA is Scotland's requalification route for solicitors, barristers, and overseas-qualified lawyers already admitted in another jurisdiction. It is not the route Scotland's own law graduates take (LLB, then the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, then a traineeship — no discrete exam).
The Qualified Lawyers Assessment (QLA) is the Law Society of Scotland's requalification route - for solicitors, barristers, and overseas-qualified lawyers already admitted elsewhere who want to qualify as a Scottish solicitor, not a first-time law degree route. Scotland is a genuinely mixed legal system: its private law (Obligations, Conveyancing, Trusts and Succession) is substantially civilian/Roman-law-influenced, while its criminal and public law lean common-law in style - a real, structural departure from every other jurisdiction in this exam-prep line. Each of the 11 mandatory subjects is its own separate, open-book paper, built from essay and problem questions, sat twice yearly in May and November, with no official teaching materials provided by the Law Society.
