The National Committee on Accreditation's assessment for foreign-trained lawyers seeking to practise law in Canada — seven mandatory subjects, each its own open-book, essay-heavy exam.
Who Is This For?
This is the National Committee on Accreditation's own assessment for lawyers trained outside Canada — a prerequisite before a foreign-trained lawyer can then sit a province's own bar admission exam (e.g., Ontario's Barrister and Solicitor exams). It is not that provincial bar exam itself, and it is not the route Canadian law graduates take.
The NCA (part of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada) assesses foreign-trained lawyers seeking accreditation to practise in Canada, assigning each applicant a set of subjects based on their own legal education. The mandatory Canadian-content core includes Legal Research and Writing and Indigenous Law and Peoples alongside the longer-standing core subjects; check the NCA's own requirements for what applies to you. Unlike a single combined bar exam, each subject is its own separate 3-hour, open-book exam built from short-answer, essay, and problem questions — real issue-spotting and applied analysis, not primarily multiple-choice.
