At a glance

  • 34 countries or territories have a figure.
  • The highest is Switzerland at 52.4% (2024) and the lowest is North Macedonia at 0.7% (2024).
  • The middle value (the median) is 14.8%.

What it counts

People living in households that rent their dwelling at the market price, as a share of the population, from the EU survey on income and living conditions, in the latest year each country reports (since 2021).

What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison

Many countries also have rented homes at reduced or no rent (social housing, family, employer), which are counted separately and not shown here, and the rules on rent, eviction and tenant protection differ widely. The figure says nothing about whether renters are well protected.
