At a glance

  • 34 countries or territories have a figure.
  • The highest is Albania at 94.6% (2025) and the lowest is Switzerland at 42.0% (2024).
  • The middle value (the median) is 73.9%.

What it counts

People living in households that own the dwelling (with or without a mortgage), as a share of the population, from the EU survey on income and living conditions, in the latest year each country reports (since 2021).

What it leaves out, and how far to trust a comparison

Ownership differs in meaning: in some countries families inherit or hold homes outright, in others mortgages are long, and rules on renting, tenant protection and taxes shape the choice. High ownership does not mean the housing system works better or worse.
