The Law To Know

Module 7

Receiving feedback, coaching and growing people

Supervision does not end with checking work and giving feedback. The best supervisors leave people better than they found them. They help others to see their own strengths and gaps, ask questions that lead them to answers rather than handing over every solution, talk with them about where they want to go and give them the work, the support and the credit that move them there. They also model what they ask: they ask for feedback themselves and receive it well. This final module looks at receiving feedback (because you cannot teach what you cannot do), at coaching, at development conversations and career planning, at mentoring and sponsorship, at stretch work and fair credit, and at the team as a place where people grow. It ends with a plan for your own development as a supervisor. All the people are invented.
