Capstone
Capstone: supervising the Fairholme team
Brightwater & Cole is an invented law firm. You are the senior associate leading the legal due diligence for a client, Fairholme Bakeries, which is buying a small chain of cafés, Tilbury Coffee Roasters, for a price of about 4 million. Signing is in three weeks. Your partner, Mr Achterberg, is on trial elsewhere for most of the next fortnight and has said, ‘You run it; call me for anything big.’ Your team is three juniors. Mr Danso, a second-year associate, is quick, keen and produces a lot, but has twice missed errors that a second look would have caught. Ms Lindqvist, a first-year associate in her fifth week, works remotely from another time zone, speaks English as her third language, rarely asks questions and has never done due diligence. Mr Petrov, a fourth-year associate, is proven on routine commercial work and has become quiet and bored. Everything here is invented. Use the tools of the course to plan the supervision, and write a short plan.
