Module 4
The numbers and the plan: costs, income, break-even, cash flow and funding
A firm that is full of work and short of cash is one of the commonest sights in small practice. The work is real and the clients are happy, and the bank account is empty because bills go out on the first of the month and fees come in ninety days later. Planning does not prevent this by magic. It prevents it by making the numbers visible before they hurt: what it costs to open and to keep open, how income is actually produced, how many hours must be billed to survive, how long the gap between work and money will last, and how the firm is funded through it. This module teaches the arithmetic in plain steps and gives you the Firm Break-Even Calculator to try with your own assumptions. The figures in the examples are invented, and your own will differ.
