The Law To Know

Module 5

Setting up: premises, technology, and the systems that run the firm

A new firm’s setup choices tend to be made in a rush, by whoever is nearest to a decision, and then lived with for years. A lease signed for a prestige office, a bundle of software that nobody integrated and an intake process that is an email inbox are all common, and all costly to unpick. This module treats setup as design. It covers premises and how to choose among them, the technology a small practice needs and what each part is for, the security that clients and regulators expect and the five everyday systems that make a firm run: intake, opening matters, recording time and billing, the diary of dates and closing files. It uses the methods of the Legal Engineer Program, because a one-person firm is the best place to design a good process: nothing is yet set in stone.
