Module 7
The first year and beyond: rhythm, the common failures, the first hire and wellbeing
A firm’s first year is a test of habits more than of law. The lawyers who get through it well are the ones who do a small number of dull things reliably: record time daily, send bills promptly, look at the bank balance every week, chase unpaid invoices and review the plan every quarter. The ones who struggle are usually doing excellent legal work and neglecting these. This final module of the course describes the rhythm of a healthy new firm, the few measures worth watching, the failures that recur, how to decide when to make the first hire, how to review and adjust the plan and how to look after the one asset that the firm cannot do without: you.
