The Law To Know

Module 2

Where lawyers work and what they do: settings, practice areas and how to choose

‘What kind of lawyer?’ has two questions inside it: where do you work, and what work do you do? A commercial litigator in a very large firm, a family lawyer in a two-person practice, a government lawyer drafting regulations and a legal aid lawyer representing tenants all hold the same licence and have very different weeks. This module describes the main settings and the main kinds of work, and gives you a way of comparing them honestly. It does not tell you which to choose; it shows what each is like, so that you can ask better questions of the people who do the work. Figures such as salaries are left out on purpose, because they differ so much between countries and years.
