Module 3
The shape of the work: matters, deadlines, supervision and a real week
A lawyer’s work is made of matters. A matter is a piece of work for a client with a beginning, a middle and an end, and a lawyer usually has many of them at the same time, each at a different stage and each with its own deadlines. The skill of the profession is less the brilliant argument than the reliable management of many commitments, to many people, over time. This module describes how a matter runs, why deadlines matter so much in law, how time is recorded and why, how supervision and delegation work, how a file should look, and what a real week contains. The Time and Stress courses of the Interpersonal Skills series go deeper into the personal side.
