How to use it

  • When: you are selling or buying a car, motorcycle, van or similar vehicle between private people (or a small business), and want a clear written record of the deal.
  • Who signs: the seller and the buyer, each with a copy. If the vehicle is owned by more than one person, every owner signs as seller.
  • Fill in everything in [square brackets] and cross out options that do not apply. Copy the vehicle details exactly from the registration document, never from memory.
  • Before you sign: the buyer should see the registration document, check that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the document matches the number on the vehicle, and check for unpaid loans, liens or fines. The seller should check the buyer's identity and how the money will be paid.
  • Payment: a bank transfer leaves a record. Be careful with large cash payments and with cheques you cannot confirm.
  • Tip: both sides keep a signed copy, the seller keeps proof of handover and of the change of registration, and the seller cancels or transfers the insurance.
