The Law To Know

Capstone

Capstone: Corvane Pay enters Marlen

Corvane Pay is an invented payments company that has operated for four years in its home country, Arden, where it holds a licence and runs a card-acceptance and wallet service for small shops. The board wants to launch in Marlen in eight months. You are the new head of compliance. The Marlen Digital Safety Act has just been adopted, and a Marlen payments regulator has published a draft licensing rule. Nobody at Corvane has read either carefully. Your chief executive, Ms Ilse Verhoeven, asks you three questions: Does the Act apply to us? What exactly must we do, and by when? Can we launch on time? The facts are incomplete: the company has about 40 employees in Arden and plans to hire 15 in Marlen; its annual turnover is not yet certain for the coming year; the wallet app already has a messaging feature that lets shops and customers talk to each other; and the head of security says the incident process is ‘in good shape’ but cannot show a test. A partner bank in Marlen will also impose its own contract terms. Everything is invented. Use the four tools of the course and write a short report for the board.

General education on regulatory mapping and compliance analytics, using invented regulations, regulators, companies and figures. It states common practice in simplified form and does not describe any one country's law, which differs and changes; rules on scope, interpretation, reporting, record keeping, monitoring of staff and penalties in particular vary. It is not legal or compliance advice, and it does not replace advice from a qualified lawyer on a real regulatory question.
