Module 6
Running the office: archives, staff, technology, fees, and the pressures of a notarial practice
A notary is both a legal professional and the owner of a small, regulated business. The same person who must decide whether a signer has capacity must also decide how to store a century of deeds, how to supervise a clerk, how to protect client data from a cyberattack, how to price the work and how to keep going through the quiet months. In many countries, a notary’s office is a family-sized enterprise with a few staff, strict rules about premises and records and regular inspection. This module covers the running of the office: records and archives, staff and delegation, technology, fees and income, quality control, clients and complaints, and the personal side. The Notary Office Planner puts the numbers in front of you. The rules on fees, offices and technology differ widely between countries, and the figures in the tool are invented or your own.
