Capstone: a first year at Harbourside Mediation Service

Sana Whitfield has just completed her foundation training and joined Harbourside Mediation Service, an invented non-profit service that handles community, workplace and small civil disputes and takes cases from a local court. She has a background in teaching. For her first year she co-mediates under the supervision of an experienced mediator, Omar Castellan, and then begins to mediate alone. She also hopes to build a small private practice. In her first year she will meet six situations. At each step, decide what Sana should do and why, using what you have learnt in the seven modules, and then write a one-page plan for her second year. The people, places and procedures are invented and general, not those of any one country.

Module 1 of this course is free, and this is not it. Unlock the whole course below, or go back to the course page.

General education on the work of a mediator across legal systems, using invented people, services and cases. It is not legal, clinical or career advice, and it does not qualify anyone to practise as a mediator. Mediation law, accreditation, confidentiality, enforcement and safeguarding rules differ between countries and change: check the rules that apply to you with your accrediting body, your service and your regulator.
