The Law To Know

Module 6

Contracts and clauses: the anatomy of an English-language contract

Contracts written in English are the most common reason for a foreign lawyer to need legal English. International sales, loans, licences and shareholders’ agreements are very often drafted in English, whatever the law that governs them. English-language contracts follow a familiar structure, and their key clauses repeat from one contract to the next. Once you know the structure and the standard clauses, a new contract is much less strange.
