Module 2
Setting direction: purpose, strategy, objectives and saying no
Ask most heads of legal teams what their strategy is, and you will hear a list of things they would like to happen: more clients, better quality, happier people, more technology. A list of wishes is not a strategy. A strategy is a set of choices: where the team will concentrate, how it will be better than the alternatives and what it will not do. Without choices, everyone in the team does what seems best to them, and the team drifts. This module teaches how to set direction in a practical, honest way: a purpose that people can recognise, the three questions of strategy, a plain assessment of where you stand, a few objectives that can be measured, the courage to say no and the discipline of explaining it so that people can act.
