Module 5
Leading change: why it fails, how to make it stick and how to bring lawyers with you
Change is constant in legal practice: new technology, new regulation, clients who want fixed fees and faster answers, mergers, new ways of working. Most change efforts disappoint. Surveys of organisational change in many sectors find that a large share fail to achieve what they set out to do, and the usual reasons are about people, not about the idea: no clear reason, too little communication, no one accountable, a leader who loses interest or an organisation that slides back to old habits. Lawyers add particular difficulties: scepticism, a wish for evidence, risk aversion and the autonomy that makes them hard to direct. This module teaches a practical sequence for leading change, how to understand and respond to resistance, how to handle change that involves technology and how to make it stick.
