Module 6
Keeping good people: why they leave, what makes them stay and how to ask
Replacing a good lawyer or paralegal costs far more than most managers admit: the recruiting, the training, the months before a replacement is productive, the knowledge and client relationships that walk out of the door and the effect on those who remain. And yet firms are often surprised when someone leaves. The surprise comes from not asking. This module is about retention as a practice of attention: understanding why people really leave (which is often not the reason given or assumed), what makes them stay, how to ask them in a way that gets an honest answer, what is particular to legal work, and how culture and wellbeing underlie it all. The Retention Check lets you practise thinking about a person’s working life, always as a prompt for a conversation, never as a verdict.
